Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis in veterinary medicine
HRV reflects the balance of the autonomic nervous system. See how it is computed from the ECG and where to apply it in the clinic.
Heart rate variability (HRV) describes the small variations in the interval between beats. It is a non-invasive marker of the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic tone.
How the ECG measures HRV
From the series of RR intervals, time- and frequency-domain indices are derived, along with representations such as the Lorenz plot and the histogram — available on INcardio devices.
Clinical applications
HRV has been studied in pre-surgical assessment, follow-up of chronic cardiac patients, athletic animals, geriatrics and stress response — always as a complement to clinical evaluation.
